Lost in unemployment

The German TV magazine Panorama has revealed what most people knew anyway (probably because of elections, but the topic is relevant anyway). The statistics of the Arbeitsagentur are cooked. Recently, the federal agency revealed that unemployment fell in May 2009. People not included in the statistics as unemployed are those that

  • are judged to be too old to find employment
  • are unemployed but sick at the date of compilation
  • are taken care of by a private company that helps the unemplyoed to find a new job. These companies do what government office does for the rest

Unemployment today would be above 5 million by traditional accounting, the magazine concludes. And that does not even include the workers on short hours (Kurzarbeit). The German economy is in a very bad shape.
