Car subsidies – Abwrackprämie

The Süddeutsche has noted that in the aftermath of the Great Depression Adolf Hitler introcued his car subsidy – the so-called Verschrottungshilfe. That way the Opel 1 was then priced at 2.650 instead of 2.850 reichsmarks. However, all that did not help since few people owned cars and so demand for cars did not surge. Readers interested in economic policy of the Third Reich might want to have a look at The Wages of Destruction by Adam Tooze or at The Great Slump by Harold James. (Both books do not mention the Verschrottungshilfe.)
